Case Study: River Water Level Monitoring

ABM’s Remote Level Sensors and Support Solve Challenges for Flood Monitoring Application

An environmental company required a level sensor to remotely monitor and control water levels in a river for a flood monitoring application.

For this project, ABM’s wireless, remote non-contact ultrasonic level sensor was selected as the ideal solution. The low-power sensor can operate for several years using internal batteries. The built-in cellular modem connects the sensor to ABM’s secured servers for communication. From there, the customer can log into ABM’s web-based customer portal to remotely monitor and control their level sensor.

In addition, the customer receives 24/7 online remote support to monitor performance, optimize the sensor parameters, and help with troubleshooting and diagnostics. ABM’s solution met the customer’s application demand for a reliable, maintenance-free remote level sensor.

Problem

Installation for the application required the level sensor to be mounted on the side of a bridge. Various surfaces, such as the bridge structure, supports, water surface and ground below, could reflect sound waves from the ultrasonic level sensor. Multiple reflections from these surfaces can create false echoes, leading to erroneous measurements.

Solution

ABM technicians quickly identified multiple reflections on the echo profile while performing remote set-up of the sensor. To eliminate the effects of multiple reflections, the technician applied the Level Jump Filter to filter out unwanted echoes and identify the intended target. With remote support from ABM to optimize the sensor’s parameters, the customer has peace of mind that their sensor is operating reliably with no expensive service visits required.
