Ultrasonic Transducer Working Principle

An ultrasonic air transducer operates on the principle of utilizing piezoelectric materials to convert electrical energy into mechanical vibrations and vice versa.

These transducers emit and receive ultrasonic sound waves. The transducer consists of a piezoelectric crystal. When an alternating electrical current is applied to the crystal, it undergoes mechanical deformation and vibrates at the same frequency as the electrical signal. This vibration generates sound waves that propagate through the air.

When these emitted waves encounter an object or surface, some energy reflects back toward the transducer. The same piezoelectric crystal then acts in reverse, converting the mechanical vibrations from returning waves into electrical signals. These signals are then processed to determine various characteristics such as distance, presence of objects, or material properties.

Benefits

ABM ultrasonic transducers are easy to install and require no maintenance. Our transducers handle dust, moisture, vibrations, flooding, and high temperatures without fail. The self-cleaning feature removes condensation and any other solid build-up from the radiating transducer face.

Our transducers and drivers have been designed and engineered to overcome the known challenges of utilizing ultrasonic technologies for level and distance measurement. Advantages of our ultrasonic technology include:

  • Very uniform polar pattern, negligible side lobes
  • Very uniform near field
  • Very wide frequency bandwidth that produces uniform echoes, short ringing and wide temperature operation
  • No housing influence on transducer operation
  • No mounting influence on the transducers performance
  • Self-cleaning face due to a highly active driver – removes condensation and any other solid build-up
  • Performance in the transmit and receive modes is not temperature dependant
  • No influence of thermal shocks on the transducers materials
  • Transducer face can be covered by any material (PVC, Teflon, 316L stainless steel and more)
  • Built-in temperature compensation
  • Compact sizing to fit in tight places
  • Matching to any pulse transceiver

Applications

Our custom ultrasonic transducers are available in various frequencies (range) and enclosure options to meet our partner’s application demand. Ultrasonic technology is used for various applications in many industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, water, wastewater, mining, chemical, oil and automotive, including:

  • Distance measurement
  • Industrial automation (level sensing, flow measurement)
  • Automotive systems ( parking assistance, collision avoidance)
  • Machinery automation (obstacle avoidance, crane, sprayer height)
  • Object detection (absence or presence)
  • Conveyor monitoring (counting objects)
  • Proximity
