Background

A leading provider of mining process data solutions required a reliable, non-contact sensor to measure the profile of coal, ore, and other bulk materials on moving conveyor belts. Accurate profile measurement is critical for supporting the real-time process data operators rely on to optimize throughput and improve efficiency.

Solution

ABM’s solid-material ultrasonic level sensor was integrated into the conveyor belt monitoring system to provide continuous, accurate measurements in harsh, dusty mining environments. The non-contact design eliminates mechanical wear, while a fast response time accurately tracks changing material profiles on high-speed conveyors.

Engineered for demanding applications, the sensor is available with a high-temperature Teflon transducer or, for corrosive environments, with a 316L stainless steel housing and a Teflon transducer. A very short blanking distance enables accurate measurement even when material passes close to the transducer face, maximizing the usable measurement range.

A unique self-cleaning transducer prevents material buildup, significantly reducing maintenance and maintaining measurement performance. Automatic power and sensitivity adjustments optimize signal strength for reliable measurement on uneven surfaces of coal, ore, and other solid bulk materials.
